WLtoys Q383 – A streams video live
Today we’re checking out the WLtoys Q383 – A which is a new mini hexacopter featuring a 720p FPV camera, headless mode, flip mode, and one key return. If you would rather have this hexacopter with a standalone camera you can check out the WLtoys Q383 – C or the WLtoys Q383 – B for WiFi FPV.
Design wise they’ve decided on 6 motors, 2 blades propellers, and a prop guard frame that covers the top of the hexacopter. It comes in orange and black with LEDs on the front that look a bit like eyes and also appears to have LEDs on the bottoms of the arms which is no real huge surprise.
With the prop guards it looks like they will do a decent job if you bump into a wall or something but they’re not going to protect the hexacopter from something like a tree branch.
The 500mAh battery they’ve included for the WLtoys Q383 – A has the upside of being removeable but the downside is that it seems to be a proprietary battery which means you won’t be able to use anything except batteries made for this hexacopter without modification.
With the FPV version they’ve also included what looks to be a rechargeable battery for the transmitter based on the included items image, however it makes no mention of this in the product description.
The camera itself is mounted to the front of the hexacopter and appears to be at a fixed forward facing angle. Video is streamed over FPV to the receiver built into the transmitter and video is recorded to a microSD card on the hexacopter. While FPV is nice one downside I can see is that the camera faces forward, if it doesn’t have a wide FOV this means you’ll spend a lot of time looking at the ground while moving.
Other features on this hexacopter like flip mode are pretty basic and there is really no sense in talking about them.
The transmitter for the FPV version of this quadcopter is quite nice looking with a console controller style layout, longer control sticks and an FPV screen built right into the transmitter. Longer control sticks are going to provide more control which is great since these smaller hexacopters can be a little bit touchy.
There is an extra battery pictures on the product page which I assume will power both the transmitter and the FPV receiver.
Overall the WLtoys Q383 – A isn’t a bad looking little hexacopter with decent specs and a decent looking transmitter. The only concern I have is will you be able to use the FPV while moving, since it’s on a fixed forward angle it will be pitched towards the ground while moving, this could be solved with a high FOV but we shall have to see. Seems like a quadcopter worth taking a look at so be sure to click the link below to check it out.
